East Fork:

A Journal of the Arts

Olivia Buschle

trigger warning: this poem contains sexual assault.

let’s skip to the good part.
pressed together.
heat of the moment.
your lips fit with mine like they were made just for me.
you hold my waist like everything will fall apart if you don’t.
passion, lust, and everything in between.
it’s just you and i.

well,
you and i, and the voice inside my head.
the voice of panic.
the voice getting louder with the fall of each article of clothing.
you take my heavy breathing as encouragement.
it’s the opposite.
“stop,” i say.
you immediately do.
the problem isn’t you. it’s him.

my eyes squeeze shut.
i forget where i am.
all i see is the room.
all i smell is alcohol.
all i feel is him.
“stop,” i say.
he does not.

this life is for you

this is for
the wannabes and the misfits
and the losers and the liars
and the goody two shoes and the class clowns

this is for
the homebodies
and the ones that go out every night
the introverts and the extroverts

this is for
those with crooked noses
and yellow teeth
and anybody with imperfections that they think they have

this is for
the donkeys and the elephants
those that don’t pick sides
and those that are lost in the middle

this is for
the boy with black hair
and the girl that’s six foot four
and the one who doesn’t know who they are

this is for the
boys that like boys
and the girls that like girls
and the people that love everyone

this is for
you and i
and he and she
and they and them

this is for everyone.
and everyone needs to hear this.
listen closely.

your smile can catch a room on fire,
not just light it up.
you can move mountains,
not just climb them.

don’t let anyone make you feel inadequate.
don’t laugh any quieter just because someone thinks it’s too loud.
there is no such thing as too loud.
no one can silence happiness.

you misfits have a place.
you extroverts are necessary.
you crooked-nose humans are beautiful.
your sexuality is yours.
don’t let anybody take that from you.

you are an incredible person
and you belong here.
this world needs you.
this life is for you.
